No excuses now: gyms reopen after 6 months

Michigan’s gyms are open for workouts after nearly six months. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order took effect Wednesday, allowing fitness centers to operate in a swath of the state that holds 93% of Michigan’s population. Gyms face 25% capacity limits, and face coverings are mandatory, even during workouts. Gyms in northern Michigan reopened with restrictions earlier in summer.

Alyssa Tushman said it was “surreal” to open the doors of her three Burn Fitness gyms in suburban Detroit.

“I think we’re actually still processing how long we were closed,” Tushman said from the Rochester Hills location.

Personal trainers led one-on-one, in-person workouts while other trainers conducted classes by video. A few members worked out in the main gym area.

“It’s been a long time without doing this,” said Tony Rosasco, 21, of Troy, who is training to become a firefighter. “It’s not the same feeling working out at home. I really wanted to get back here.”
