The Gerald R. Ford International Airport is the first in the nation launching ultraviolet technology that can disinfect surfaces.
Tim Haizlip is director of maintenance. He explains, it can destroy the microbiology of viruses.
“U.V. technology is technology that's been around since the 1800's. It's light emitting technology that kills bacteria and germs unforeseen to the human eye without the need for chemicals.”
The airport is deploying a number of U.V. tools for efficiently disinfecting and keeping visitors safe.
“We are looking at an autonomous robot that actually is set by an operator on a predetermined route. Once it’s set and turned on to be released on its route it does not require human interaction anymore.”
There’s a U.V. chamber where guests can sanitize cell phones, laptops, keys and other personal items along with a footwear sanitizing station and a U.V. pod for wheelchairs and luggage trolleys.
