Currently the state of Michigan is in phase four of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s economic reopening plan and as long as the West Michigan region remains in this phase schools are allowed to hold in-person instruction.
Caledonia Public School Districts have announced its plan for reopening offering in-person instruction. The district following safety procedures required by the state. There’s also an online instruction option for those who prefer it. Here’s Superintendent Dedrick Martin speaking at a virtual town hall earlier this month.
“Overwhelmingly Caledonia parents prefer to be in-person to ensure the instructional quality but they believe strongly but they believe strongly that the greatest way to provide safety is through distance learning. In recognition of this we have focused our attention and energy working towards in person instruction if allowed.”
All students will receive health screenings at the start of the school day. Masks must be worn at all times by 6th through 12th graders.
Not far from Caledonia at Grand Rapids Public Schools, in-person instruction is not option for the first nine weeks of the school year. This week, GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby explained that distance learning is the mode most preferred by district parents.
“I believe starting with distant learning is practicing what we preach and is by far our safest approach to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.”
Schools must approve reopening plans by August 15, or seven days before the first day of school, whichever comes first.
