Kent Intermediate School District rolls out plan for K-12 return to classrooms

The results are in, and with the majority of parents surveyed, the Kent Intermediate School District has drafted its School Re-entry Plan for navigating the coronavirus pandemic this fall.

More than 30,000 parents responded to the Kent Intermediate Superintendents’ Association School Re-entry Survey.

“Almost 90% of the parents who responded to the survey believe that in-person instruction is the very best option in terms of a quality educational experience for their child.”

Ron Caniff, Kent Intermediate School District Superintendent explains that’s the plan come this fall.

“As we’re allowed to do so with the health circumstances come August 24th which is for many of our school districts is when we start the school year.”

For students with compromised immune systems or for parents who aren’t confident in a return to the classroom until a vaccine is developed, a high-quality online learning option will be made available by district. A hybrid learning model blending face-to-face with online learning is not an option unless circumstances dictate a need.

“If we have no choice, for example due to executive order as a result of the health circumstances that are in place whether we’re in August, whether we’re in November, whether we’re in December and there’s a return of the virus, that our only way to meet with students face-to-face is to do so via a hybrid, we’ll go there.”

Caniff says student’s mental development and health safety are the top priorities. Safety protocols will be set by the state revealed in the June 30th release of “Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap.”
