Good news today for Grand Rapids Public Schools.  While consistently rated near the top, City High Middle school has now moved to the number one spot amongst Michigan High Schools.  It’s also rated as one of the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

“We are thrilled. It couldn’t come at a better time to have some great news and encouragement about staying engaged even in these tough times and it serves as wonderful recognition of the hard work going on at City and in Grand Rapids Public Schools.”

Ryan Huppert is the Principal at City High Middle School in Grand Rapids.  He says City High Middle Schools’ recent number one ranking in the state of Michigan is great news… and the national ranking out of more than 17-thousand schools, is just as exciting.

“It’s huge, we’ve only hit number one once before. So we’re excited to be back at the top of the state. And we’ve never been ranked so high nationally. So we moved up from 38 to number 21 in the nation.”

And if that’s not enough, Huppert says they’ve also won the Blue Ribbon School award-the first time it’s been awarded in the school district.

City High Middle was the first school in the area to offer the coveted International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma program.  Principal Huppert says equity is important.  He says the school has a 53 percent minority enrollment and 44 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.

“As we factor in some challenges, the high performance that we have with all of our students, makes us stand out as a very high achieving school.”

City has also been ranked among the top high schools in America by Newsweek and The Washington Post.
