This week, Spectrum Health President and CEO Tina Freese Decker explained in a video that the hospital system will exceed COVID-19 patient capacity in early May.

“This peak in cases would be more than our health care system, or any health care system, could handle.”

Based on the information available of infection rates in the state, Decker says the rate of COVID-19 deaths in Michigan are as fast as New York’s if not faster.

“In response, we are making every possible effort to increase the capacity of our hospitals. We have already canceled all non-urgent surgeries and procedures. We have plans in place to substantially expand our ICU capacity.”

In the last two days, Kent County has seen the highest increase in new coronavirus cases according to data from the health department. To lessen the burden on local hospitals, Decker urges the public to stay at home and practice social distance when going outside.
