Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order that closes many businesses and public gathering spots.
It’s part of the state’s efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
The list of places that are closed includes bars and restaurants, gyms, health clubs, theaters, and libraries. Restaurants are still allowed to offer meals for pick-up and delivery.
In an appearance on M-S-N-B-C, Whitmer said she’s aware of the hardship this will cause many people and businesses.
“These are not easy decisions, but they are the right thing to do. We have to be aggressive on the front end to mitigate the impacts on people’s health and on our economy.”
The order lasts until at least March 30th.
Whitmer also signed a separate order that extends unemployment benefits for people who are sick or forced to stay home for reasons related to the COVID-19 outbreak.
