Three proposals Tuesday in Kent County as voters in Grattan Township will consider a new additional millage of 1 mil that will go towards public gravel road repair, maintenance, and improvements. If approved and levied, the millage would raise roughly $190,000 in the first year alone.
North of Grand Rapids, residents in Sparta Township will vote on whether or not to renew a millage that will help overhaul the fire department’s equipment and station. Daniel Onley is the Chief of Sparta Fire. He says, not only is the department in desperate need of upgrades to its equipment and station, but voters should remember, that the Sparta Fire Department is not asking residents to pay anymore than they already are.
“First of all, this is a renewal, we are not asking for any increases,” Onley said. “We provide this service to the community, and without these added funds, I can’t provide a good as service as we would be able to.”
Meanwhile Wyoming Public Schools is hoping residents will approve a Headlee Override millage proposal to bring the district’s operating millage back up to 18 mills. The district’s revenue was reduced by the Headlee Amendment, a 1978 amendment that automatically “rolls back” the millage rate to equal the rate of inflation.
Polls are open 7:00AM to 8:00PM on Tuesday.
