Kent County Recycling center temporarily closes facility affecting services in GR

The Kent County Recycling Center has closed their facility to replace a mechanical screen used to sort paper according to a press release from the Kent County Department of Public Health. The renovations will take place until March 13 and all curbside and drop-off locations have been suspended until then. Officials from the county’s recycling center have said the shutdown is necessary to replace paper screens that separate paper from plastic and metal.

While, the City of Grand Rapids will continue to pick up all recycling items from homes, Amy Snow-Buckner from the City of Grand Rapids says trucks will be dropping items off with the rest of the garbage at Kent County’s Waste-to-Energy facility.

“We are still picking up recyclables through our curbside collection program and taking those recyclables to the county’s waste to energy facility which generates electricity to 11,000 homes.”

Residents may keep their recyclables until the recycling center opens says Snow-Buckner.

“It may take a few trips on our part so that’s certainly something that folks can do, but in the meantime we are taking it to the waste-to-energy facility, where like I said, it provides electricity to 11,000 homes, so it’s being used for a good cause.”

The City of Grand Rapids will resume taking recyclables to the recycling center on Monday, March 16.
