New law would help low-income families avert tax foreclosure

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a law today that will help low-income families avoid home foreclosures for unpaid taxes.
 

The governor signed the bill in Detroit, where the county since 2008 has foreclosed on a third of all properties for overdue taxes. This new law will operate differently in different parts of the state, but it allows local governments to forgive penalties and interest. Whitmer says that will help low-income homeowners come up with an affordable plan to catch up on their taxes.
 
                 “Because everyone at some point needs a little bit of help.”

The law also lets local governments cap the homeowner’s debt at 10 percent of the property’s taxable value.
