Resolution to not make Muskegon a 'Sanctuary County' is removed from agenda by commissioners

The resolution to not make Muskegon County a Sanctuary County was first introduced by Commissioner Zach Lahring two months after the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners tabled a resolution to affirm the county as a welcoming county.

“The board did not approve some of the policy changes that would make us a “Welcoming Community” to illegal aliens and so we are trying to head this off by saying we do not want to be a sanctuary county.”

For Lahring this resolution is about ensuring Muskegon does not become a county that is welcoming to undocumented people. And while Muskegon County Commissioner, Robert Scolnick, is in support of the resolution, he says he doesn’t think this issue should be considered a priority.

“Bringing up polarizing issues like sanctuary county when it really isn’t a problem seems to me to be diverting the attention to issues that just polarize people and really don’t make any positive change in Muskegon county.”

For now, the fate of the resolution is on a standstill. Marcia Hughes board chair of the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners decided to withdraw it from the agenda on Tuesday afternoon after learning several of the county commissioners would not be present.
