Nessel offers suggestions to House committee on expungement bills

Attorney General Dana Nessel says there’s room for improvement on a package of bills aimed at expanding the state’s expungement laws.

Nessel went through a series of suggestions on almost every bill at a House committee hearing. Though she is largely in favor of the legislation.

One area of concern involves expungement for traffic offenses. Nessel says there are too many exemptions for who can get a crime set aside. For example for certain offenses that happened in a work zone, you can’t get those expunged.

“To say that these people can never get these particular offenses expunged I think is a little draconian.”

Nessel also advocated for allowing a drunk driving offense to be cleared from a person’s public record.
