A plan to expand the state’s expungement law to allow more people to get a clean slate is up for debate in Lansing tomorrow.

It’s a bipartisan package of bills that supporters say would be good for the economy. They say taking low level misdemeanors and felonies from a long time ago off a person’s record will help them get better jobs.

Republican Representative Graham Filler is chair of the committee that will hear the bills.

“This does impact hundreds of thousands of people. And then, presuming that we’ll make some small changes here and there, but I think it’s got support across the board.”

Current law allows for a person to have one felony or two misdemeanors set aside. Some of the bills would increase the number of convictions that can be set aside. Another would allow for certain crimes to automatically be taken off a person’s record after 10 years.
