This week marks the beginning of Judge Christina Elmore’s first week as Kent County Circuit Court Judge. For the last two years, Elmore served as judge of the 61stDistrict Court where she handled misdemeanor cases, landlord and tenant actions and some civil case—and now her cases will involve dealing with more sensitive matters.
“Now what I will be doing is child abuse and neglect cases as well as juvenile delinquency cases, and handling domestic relations cases which include divorces and paternity cases as well as personal protection orders.”
As the first African American woman on the bench, Elmore says she feels proud to bring a different perspective that has never been represented before.
“The lens that I have is growing up in America as a Black child and now Black woman -- I have a perspective from that upbringing and those experiences that the other judges that are on the bench with me have not had.”
A lifetime of believing in fairness and justice says Elmore is one of the most important things she brings to the job.
“People should be treated fairly and with dignity and respect, no matter who they are, no matter where they come from.”
