Grand Rapids' City Manager names interim chief of police

Mark Washington made the announcement on Thursday that Deputy Police Chief David Kiddle would be the interim chief of the Grand Rapids Police Department following the retirement of chief of Police David Rahinksy. Next Tuesday will be Rahinsky’s last day with GRPD.

Washington said  “As interim police chief, he will run the day-to-day operations of the department, assist with upcoming labor negotiations, complete the staffing and deployment study, prepare the department’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget and continue to strengthen relationships with the community.”

Kiddle has been with GRPD since 1992 and has served as deputy chief since March 2015, overseeing administrative and investigative services.

On Wednesday, the city of Grand Rapids began the search for next police chief by issuing a request for proposals from executive search firms. The search firm will seek community input during the selection process. Washington expects to hire a new police chief in June or July.
