Kent County unveils interactive recycling exhibit

The Kent County Department of Public Works has created a new exhibit that aims to show visitors the importance of home recycling.

Located in the county's Recycling and Education Center, the exhibit gives viewers an up close look at what a landfill truly looks like, and how the facility could turn muchd of the discarded trash it receives into other objects through its recycling process.

It’s been 40 years since the state of Michigan implemented a deposit law for bottles and cans, becoming at the time, a leader in the recycling effort.

However, over time, Michigan has become one of the worst Great Lakes states when it comes to recycling according to the Michigan Environmental Council.

That’s because bottles and cans only make up a small percentage of waste that is recyclable, like paper, cardboard or plastic bags.

Meanwhile, the new exhibit at the Recycling and Education center is part of the Kent County Department of Public Works’ ultimate goal of reducing 90 percent of waste headed to landfills by the year 2030.
