Officials cut ribbon on GRPS Public Museum High School

Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Teresa Weatherall-Neal and Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss were joined by a number of city officials Wednesday afternoon to cut the ribbon on the school district’s new Public Museum High School.

Located within the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the new high school aims to offer a different type of learning experience, as students will engage with city archives and museum resources for research and projects.

Dr. Chris Hanks is the Principal at Grand Rapids Public Museum School.

“Using the museum as an inspiration and a resource, it’s going to foster our student’s historical and cultural knowledge, but also creativity and design,” Hanks said. “A combination of deeper learning skills and traditional academic skills.”

The school is one of 10 schools across the nation selected by education organization XQ to be part of the “Super School Project.” Dedicated to reimagining high schools, each school will receive $10 million over the next five years. Footing that bill is Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
