GRPD praises officers use of non-lethal force in suicide situation

The Grand Rapids Police Department is praising the actions of a few police officers who were able to disarm a suicidal woman using non-lethal force.

Officers responded to a call Friday of a woman armed with a knife who had been stabbing herself. After multiple attempts were made to get her to drop it, officers ultimately fired non-lethal bean bags to gain control of the situation.

“We are proud of the courageous acts of these officers from last night since their quick thinking and trained skills likely saved this woman's life,” the department said in a issued statement.

According to the GRPD, the bean bags that hit the woman caused minor bruising. She was taken to a nearby hospital for medical clearance and a mental evaluation.
