The Spectrum Health Cancer Center is once again offering free community skin cancer screenings throughout West Michigan.  It’s tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m.  The free screenings are being held in partnership with local dermatology providers.

“If you have a spot that you want to have checked out by a dermatologist hopefully with a quick in and out and we’ll get an opinion on that.”

That’s Dr. Paul Wright, Surgical Oncologist with Spectrum Cancer Center.  He says no appointments or blood work are needed for the screening.

“We are proud to partner with our local dermatology colleagues to offer free community skin cancer screenings and these are happening throughout West Michigan. It’s Tuesday, May 8th from 5 to 7 pm.  There will be five locations, including Grand Rapids, Sparta, Holland, Cutlerville and Greenville and we’re offering focus skin cancer screenings there.”

One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, with more than 3 million cases diagnosed each year.  But Dr. Wright says skin cancer screening can make a big difference.

“Skin cancer is often the most common cancer that sometimes gets missed and it presents in a variety of ways but we know that when detected early nearly all these cases are curable. The screening process is important to find these things early and then we can get you to the appropriate treatment if needed.”

Dr. Wright says the appointments will take about 15 minutes.  If a biopsy is needed they will refer you to the proper place.  If you have been diagnosed with cancer and would like a consultation or second opinion, you can call, 1-855-SH CANCER, OR 855-742-2623.
