Muskegon police to standardize service guns

Michigan public safety officers are getting new, standardized guns in a city along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. The Muskegon City Commission approved a plan last month to spend nearly $50,000 of drug forfeiture money to purchase 90 new 9mm Glock hand guns. Muskegon police officers previously had to buy their own Sig Sauer brand pistols when hired.

Director of Public Safety Jeffrey Lewis says the new guns are gender neutral and efficient. He says standardizing weapons will hold officers more accountable in case of an officer-involved shooting. He says they'd easily be able to match the weapon and barrel, which can help curtail investigative discrepancies. Lewis says officers should receive their new guns by spring qualification exams in May.

He says the transition won't be immediate but will take place soon afterward.
