President Donald Trump calls the House passage of the $1.5 trillion tax package "a big step" toward delivering on the Republican Party's promise of tax cuts by year's end.
Michigan’s U.S. Representatives voted along party lines. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the tax bill Thursday by a 227 to 205 margin. Thirteen Republicans voted against the package. None were from Michigan.
U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga of Zeeland explains the plan does three things.
“One, it provides real tax relief to low and middle income families. Increasing that per-child tax credit, new family tax credit, collapsing those tax brackets down into really four of them if you count zero, You know, we’re doubling that exemption so the $24,000 for a family is completely tax free and then you start adding in per-child tax credits and some of the other things, this is real tax relief.”
Second is tax relief for small and medium sized businesses supporting the economy and finally, Representative Huizenga points to lower the corporate tax rate.
U.S. Representatives Justin Amash of Cascade Township and Saint Joseph’s Fred Upton also voted in favor of the tax plan.
Senate Republicans are debating their own version of the tax legislation in the more sharply divided chamber.
President Donald Trump has said he wants to deliver a "Christmas present" in the form of tax cuts.
