Rosa Parks Circle named one of America's best public spaces

Grand Rapids has another reason to brag. The American Planning Association Wednesday named the city's Rosa Parks Circle as one of the five 'Great Public Spaces in America.' Not too shabby. The distinction is part of the Association’s annual ‘Great Places in America’ list, which marks the kickoff of the organization’s National Community Planning Month celebration.

“Public spaces serve a number of functions within a community, from gathering places to recreational venues, and to satisfy these varied community needs requires thoughtful collaboration and planning,” said Cynthia Bowen, president of APA in a press release. “These places demonstrate how to effectively create a sense of place that enhances the lives of all residents and visitors.”

Designed in 1999 by internationally-acclaimed artist Maya Lin, Rosa Parks Circle has hosted music festivals, ice skating, sports rallies and a place for community engagement among many others. Grand Rapids officials say they are proud of the recognition.

“Rosa Parks Circle is a great success story of partnerships that invested in public space and community efforts to activate the park through diverse programming,” said David Marquardt, director of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation. “This public space contributes greatly to the vibrancy and identity of our community. We love Rosa Parks Circle and are honored to see it nationally recognized.”

According to a press release, the city will celebrate the Great Places nomination on Saturday, October 28 with a full-day celebration event filled music, dancing, and free community activities.
