GOP senator says states should protect internet privacy if feds won’t

A Republican state lawmaker says Michigan should protect people’s internet privacy if the federal government won’t.

Congress and the Trump administration have acted to scrap a rule that would bar internet service providers from saving and selling people’s browsing histories.

That moved the fight over internet privacy to states. Michigan state Senator Rick Jones says the state has the authority to protect internet privacy and should use it. “I believe the Michigan people don’t want to be spied on, and they don’t want their information sold.” Jones says the legislation is in the process of being drafted.

But he says it does not appear a state cannot stop companies from denying service to customers who won’t agree to allow their information to be sold.
