Potential defunding of Planned Parenthood sparks protest

John Rothwell

While originally scheduled as a pro-life rally, outside of Planned Parenthood in Grand Rapids, hundreds of people lined both sides of Cherry Street to voice their support for the organization and protest its potential defunding. During his campaign, President Donald Trump said that he favored eliminating federal funding for Planned Parenthood. However, many demonstrators said that the protest was not about abortion.

"Planned Parenthood is important, it provides low cost health care for women and men and I think it is ridiculous that they are trying to defund it," Ginger Eisenberg said.

Simultaneously a small group of Pro-Life demonstrators were scattered throughout the protest.

"An unborn baby is a baby, its a human baby, a gift of life is a God given thing," Marie Capp said.

Some pro-life activists held signs that said "Planned Parenthood harvests body parts," in reference to undercover videos allegedly showing the organization selling fetal tissue, however, a grand jury later cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrong doing.
