Michigan Legislature officially open for session

wikipedia

The Michigan Legislature had its first day of session today.

There was a spirit of bipartisanship in the air during the House of Representative’s first session day.

Following their official swearing in, members chose their new seats and formally elected Republican Tom Leonard as Speaker of the House.

Leonard was nominated by Republican Lee Chatfield, but his nomination was seconded by House Democratic Leader Sam Singh.

Upon accepting the nomination, Leonard promised to bring civility and bipartisanism to the chamber.

“And I believe that over the next two years the citizens of our state not only want to see more civility in our political process, I believe that they are going to demand it.”

Leonard says the 20-16 election was one of the most uncivil in our nation’s history, from the federal to the local level.
