County, nonprofit join legal effort on toxic plume cleanup

rawstory.com

Washtenaw County and the Huron River Watershed Council are joining the city of Ann Arbor in legal efforts to get a toxic plume cleaned up.

The county and the nonprofit have filed motions seeking to intervene in previously settled litigation between the state and Gelman Sciences. The city did the same last month. The case is expected to be reopened in Washtenaw County Circuit Court.

The Ann Arbor News reports the city, county and Watershed Council could become co-plaintiffs. A hearing is Dec. 15. Gelman Sciences is responsible for the toxic chemical plume of 1,4-dioxane that's been slowly spreading through the area's groundwater for decades, contaminating much of Ann Arbor's west side and Scio Township.

It poses long-term threats to the city's water supply from the Huron River. --- Information from: The Ann Arbor News, http://www.mlive.com/ann-arbor
