Kent County in western Michigan is accepting old U.S. flags for proper disposal.

There's a box in the lobby of the downtown Grand Rapids building that's shared by the county and city.

The county wants flags to be folded respectfully before they're placed in the box. The flag disposal is a partnership between Kent County, the National Flag Foundation and other groups.

Members of American Legion Post 179 in Walker hold disposal ceremonies twice a year. The U.S. Flag Code says flags should be destroyed in a "dignified way, preferably by burning."
