Authorities in western Michigan's Ottawa County are offering training to residents on the actions they can take if faced with an active shooter situation.

The Citizen Response to Active Shooter Events class will be held Oct. 18 in the main conference room of the county sheriff's office in West Olive, west of Grand Rapids.

Organizers say the class will provide "strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event."

The class is free, but registration and identification are required. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
