Dense fog in parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula is prompting some schools to delay the start of classes or close for the day.

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory Thursday morning for most of the Lower Peninsula. Travel is expected to be slowed by visibility of less than a half-mile.

MLive.com reports Ionia Public Schools were already scheduled for a half-day Thursday, so they decided to close due to fog.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports Beal City Public Schools, Ithaca Public Schools and Mount Pleasant Public Schools were among those closed.

Some other districts were operating on a two-hour fog delay. Forecasters say the fog was expected to be cleared out by later in the morning.
