A 43-year-old southwestern Michigan man has been charged with murder in the slaying of his 88-year-old neighbor.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that Todd Maneke was arraigned Tuesday. Alfred Minka was found dead in August 2013 on the floor of his apartment in Kalamazoo, south of Grand Rapids.

He had been beaten in the head. Maneke was arrested Monday and has requested a court-appointed lawyer. He is jailed without bond and is due back in court Sept. 20 for a preliminary examination.

The newspaper reported that Maneke lived across the street from Minka. Kalamazoo Public Safety Capt. Victor Ledbetter has said Maneke was a person of interest in the slaying when things he told police didn't add up to evidence collected by investigators.
