More than 100 homeowners in the Grand Rapids-area are being warned that flammable methane gas is leaking from an old landfill.
Kent County public works director Dar Baas says the biggest concern is that methane could somehow build up in a building and lead to a fire.
He tells The Grand Rapids Press that officials are trying to determine how far the gas is migrating in Kentwood.
There are about 150 homes within 1,500 feet of the closed landfill's western edge.
A public meeting is planned for Aug. 31. Free home tests are available.
Officials believe they need to install more wells to suck methane out of the ground.
Kent County residents are paying $1.68 a year for maintenance of three closed landfills in the area.
