Report: Detroit VA hospital misspent funds on patient TVs

A report shows Detroit's Veterans Affairs hospital spent more than $300,000 on patient televisions that couldn't be installed.

The Detroit Free Press reports Wednesday that a design change was needed for installation in rooms at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center and that would have cost more.

The Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General report says the televisions and accessories were bought 2 1/2 years ago, but most remained in boxes and warranties have expired.

Facility officials and a contractor had decided -- prior to the televisions being purchased -- on a design for 15-inch TVs powered via the Ethernet.

But 14-inch TVs that use a coaxial cable were bought.

Hospital officials said in a statement that they concurred with the report's findings and recommendations to improve purchase contracts.
