Officials in Grand Rapids are encouraging people to use the city's pools and water playgrounds as a way to stay cool amid high temperatures and humidity.

The western Michigan city says pools and water playgrounds are open daily. Some communities have opened cooling centers.

Temperatures will be in the 90s in parts of Michigan through the weekend, but forecasters say it could feel hotter.

The National Weather Service issued heat advisories for the southern half of the Lower Peninsula.

Power outages have been reported in the Upper Peninsula following severe thunderstorms.

Detroit Schools planned to close many buildings by 11 a.m. Thursday due to the heat.

MLive.com reports that the Kalamazoo Speedway owner Gary Howe has cancelled Friday night's races.

He says "it's hotter than a son-of-a-gun in those cars."
