The Kent County Youth Fair is getting $2.5 million to boost its more than $5 million effort to create new fairgrounds.

Organizers say Wednesday the funds will allow the organization to build modern fairgrounds that accommodates the needs of exhibitors, patrons and vendors.

The funding is from the Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development and will cover half of the initial cost. More fundraising will take place and groundbreaking is planned for 2018.

Fair President Jon Bieneman says in a statement the fair will try to stay in the Lowell area, but it needs to move because the current site is on a floodplain with no room for growth.

The event began as the Lowell Community Fair in 1934. The fair runs Aug. 8-13 this year.
