The North Western State Trail in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula is completely open from Petoskey to Mackinaw City following a bridge replacement project.

The state Department of Natural Resources says in a statement that the Carp Lake River Bridge in Emmet County's Carp Lake Township was the final piece of the improvement project along the 32-mile trail on the former Grand Rapids to Mackinaw railroad line.

The trail is open year-round to non-motorized users and to snowmobiles from Dec. 1 to March 31. It's part of a larger regional trail network.

Trail improvements and the bridge replacement were funded primarily by the federal Transportation Alternatives Program, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Recreation Improvement Fund. Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Recreation Improvement Fund.
