Grand Rapids is kicking off projects to overhaul two parks as part of a broader effort to improve recreation opportunities citywide.

Groundbreaking ceremonies take place Thursday at Campau Park and Dickinson Park.

Construction already is taking place at Mary Waters Park. And work is set to begin in the coming weeks at Douglas, Mulick and Camelot parks. Upgrades at the parks vary, but they include updating inoperable and outdated equipment and facilities.

Plans call for work to wrap up by mid-October. The projects are funded by a 2013 voter-approved tax.

Campau Park is getting more than $650,000 in improvements, including a new splash pad, restroom facility and playground. Dickinson Park is getting more than $315,000 in upgrades, including a new picnic shelter and new playground equipment.
