The city of Portage has approved an ordinance designed to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination.

WWMT-TV reports the City Council for the Kalamazoo County community voted on Tuesday night to approve the ordinance following a public hearing.

The ordinance was proposed by the Human Services Board and is geared at preventing discrimination in housing, employment and public services.

The city of Kalamazoo and several other Michigan communities have adopted similar non-discrimination ordinances.
