Old "Welkom to Holland" signs will get a new life after being taken down as part of a plan for new gateway signs in the Michigan city known for its Dutch heritage.
Mayor Nancy DeBoer tells the Holland Sentinel she'd like the old signs to be put in places that could be good photo opportunities.
She says old signs will be checked out to see if they need to be refurbished. One old wooden "welkom" sign at the Amtrak station, for example, is propped up by lumber.
Holland was planning to remove signs with painted tulips and the phrase using the Dutch spelling of "welcome." Some residents didn't like losing the Dutch "welkom," so the new signs got another look and will include "welkom" when they're installed in July.
