Authorities say they're investigating the death of a woman whose body was found alongside a rural southwestern Michigan road as suspicious.

The Kalamazoo County sheriff's department says in a statement that the body of 32-year-old Gabrielle Irene Smith of Plainwell was found Tuesday afternoon in Texas Township. The cause and circumstances of her death are under investigation Thursday.

Smith's body was found a few hours before a pickup driver plowed into a group of adults bicycling in Kalamazoo County's Cooper Township, killing five and injuring four. Undersheriff Paul Matyas tells WOOD-TV that the woman found in Texas Township wasn't struck by a vehicle.

Matyas says the nearest home to where the body was found is about a quarter-mile away. He says the body was on the shoulder of the road.
