Speaking at a business conference on Mackinac Island, Governor Rick Snyder says the Legislature must reach a deal on a bailout for the Detroit Public Schools.
Governor Snyder told the Detroit Regional Chamber policy conference that failing to strike a deal on a Detroit schools rescue could cost Michigan taxpayers many millions of dollars.
He says that raises the prospect of bankruptcy for the district.
“And I believe that would be a huge disaster.”
The Legislature is deadlocked on a rescue package.
The disagreements include how much money to spend, and controls on the opening of new charter schools in the city.
The governor says failing to reach a deal would also send families scrambling to find schools for their children in the fall.
