Local health officials have confirmed a case of mumps at Calvin College.
The Kent County Health Department says test results were provided Friday afternoon by the state Department of Health and Human Services.
Mumps is a highly contagious virus causing fever, headache, muscle ache and loss of appetite. The most commonly-known side effect is puffy cheeks.
The virus is spread through saliva and can be transmitted by coughing, sharing drinks and utensils, or by contact with an infected person.
The KCHD says approximately 16 unvaccinated students have been identified and will be offered a preventative shot.
The department encourages those not willing to be vaccinated to avoid all campus activities.
Earlier this week, the KCHD reported a total of four samples from Calvin College were being tested for mumps. Two tested as negative, and the third was returned inconclusive.
