Handmade stones appear in trees for new art installation

A collection of sizable handmade stones has appeared in trees in a downtown Muskegon park.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports it's a new art installation by Andy Moerlein that was recently announced by the Muskegon Museum of Art.

Titled "IMPOSSIBLE," the series of stones placed in trees in Hackley Park will be displayed through April 2017.

The newspaper says the core of each piece is lightweight but the coating is strong. The outsides are painted.

In an email, Moerlein says the city "has seen many shifts of fortune through the years, but lately there is a new optimism and vitality of spirit."

He says the installation "is a symbol of this fresh identity of success and renewal" that aims to be "delightful and startling."
