The DTE Energy Foundation has given $600,000 to the Michigan Humane Society for animal cruelty investigation work and emergency rescue programs.

The funding announced Thursday from the philanthropic arm of Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. will help train law enforcement and support public safety.

Those involved say the work will help improve the safety of southeastern Michigan neighborhoods.

The Michigan Humane Society's Cruelty and Rescue Department responds to about 10,000 calls each year in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park alone.
