grandhaven.org

A permanent memorial is planned to honor a police officer in western Michigan who was shot to death more than two decades ago by an escaped jail prisoner.

The Grand Haven Tribune and The Muskegon Chronicle report the granite memorial to officer Scott Flahive will be placed outside the city's public safety complex later this year.

Flahive was 28 when he was shot Dec. 13, 1994 after stopping a car the escaped prisoner was driving because the vehicle's headlights were not on.

Funding for the project was recently lined up.

Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke says more than $20,000 was raised for the project.

There has been discussion about such a memorial for several years.

A dedication date hasn't been set.
