U. of Michigan details updates to sexual misconduct policy

The University of Michigan has released additional details of its updated sexual misconduct policy that expands definitions of unwanted conduct.

The changes also include the ability for students to appeal administrative decisions in investigations to an independent arbitrator. University President Mark Schlissel tells the Detroit Free Press that update is part of an effort to ensure the process is fair.

The newspaper reports, however, that an outside expert's review is still subject to verification by a top university official.

School officials earlier released information about the updated policy, which includes gender-based harassment and stalking. The Michigan Daily reports the full text of the policy was released Wednesday following nearly a yearlong process of revisions.

The U.S. Education Department has been investigating how dozens of schools nationwide address sexual abuse allegations.
