$1.3M deficit elimination plan approved for charter school

The state of Michigan has approved a $1.3 million deficit elimination plan for a charter school whose founder was convicted of tax evasion.

The Bay City Times reports Bay City Academy needs to assure the state it's no longer associated in any way with its former management company, owned by Steven Ingersoll.

His management company no longer runs the school, but he still owns the buildings that more than 200 students use.

Brian Lynch, who runs Mitten Management, the school's management company, says the school still must abide by its lease agreement.

Ingersoll, who also founded Traverse City Academy, faces up to five years in prison after he was convicted last year in federal court.

A lengthy sentencing hearing in the case is expected to wrap up this year.
