Consumers Energy employees are volunteering in Flint as part of efforts to help residents amid the city's crisis with lead-tainted water.

The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. says about 75 workers are handing out water door-to-door and volunteering at water distribution locations this week.

Meanwhile, the Consumers Energy Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to support early childhood education.

If consumed, lead can cause developmental delays and learning disabilities. There are a number of efforts taking place to boost Flint education, health and support programs.

In addition, the utility says the Consumers Energy Foundation is matching donations by employees and retirees up to another $25,000. The foundation also contributed $25,000 in November to the United Way of Genesee County to buy water filters.
