Amid continued growth in the greater Grand Rapids hospitality industry, a Thursday ribbon cutting celebrated the city's newest downtown-area hotel.

The 5-level, 142-room Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton is located on Dudley Place, along the Grand Rapids Medical Mile corridor - about a mile from the start of the city’s downtown core.

Project partners also highlight its proximity to Midtown – a neighborhood experiencing significant redevelopment – as an added benefit for expected area growth.

It comes following a recent Experience Grand Rapids report that notes year-over-year boosts in Kent County hotel and motel occupancy, with overall revenues of about $180 million in 2015.

The report says that's an about $20 million bump in revenues from 2014, generating close to $9 million overall in lodging taxes.

Groundbreaking for the Hampton Inn & Suites was held in May 2014, with total project costs of about $28 million.

A spokesperson says the hotel opened its doors in the beginning of 2016.

Project partners include Third Coast Development and Mount Pleasant-based Lodgco Management.
