ArtPrize seeks public art projects for display at 4 sites

The annual ArtPrize competition is seeking what it describes as ambitious public art projects for display at four downtown Grand Rapids sites.

Organizers announced Wednesday that the ArtPrize Featured Public Projects grant program will give $55,000 directly to artists, ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 per project.

The winning projects will be on display outdoors and will be in the running for the $500,000 in public vote and juried prizes to be awarded this fall. They'll be at four highly-visible sites: Vandenberg (Calder) Plaza, Ah-Nab-Awen Park, the Grand River and Gillett Bridge.

In addition to grants, selected artists also will get supplies and help with construction, shipping and engineering.

This year's ArtPrize takes place Sept. 21-Oct. 19. In 2015, ArtPrize grants totaled $220,000 to artists, venues and educators.
