W. Michigan Airport Cancellations/Delays Due to East Coast Storm

The big storm bearing down on the East Coast is wreaking havoc on flights across the country.  And West Michigan is no different.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, airlines canceled more than 2,400 flights today to, from or within the U.S.

Tara Hernandez, media spokesperson for the Gerald R. Ford International Airport says flights leaving Grand Rapids have also been impacted. She says the flights were cancelled or delayed to areas like Baltimore, Charlotte and Washington-Dulles starting this morning. The good news, she says, is that airlines are working with customers allowing passengers to make changes at no cost.

“Each airline has different operations for that, for example if you’re going to LA through Chicago, you’re not going to be aable to change your flight, because it’s not part of the impact, but if you’re heading to New York, Tennesee, Pennsylvania all of those areas are going to see a big part of the impact, so the airlines are really working with passengers to offer up the no change fees.”

Hernandez also says it’s best to call ahead and check on your flight or go to their website at flyford.org which updates flight schedules every few minutes.

Airlines are hoping by Sunday afternoon, however, to be back to full schedule to handle the influx of business travelers heading out for the week, one of the busiest travel periods.
